KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Grain thunders into rail cars and trucks zip around a storage facility in central Ukraine, a place that growing numbers of companies turned to as they struggled to export their food to people facing hunger around the world. Now, more of the grain is getting unloaded from overcrammed silos and heading to ports on the Black Sea, set to traverse a fledgling shipping corridor launched after Russia pulled out of a U.N.-brokered agreement this summer that allowed food to flow safely from Ukraine during the war.“It was tight, but we kept working … we sought how to accept every ton of products needed for our partners,” facility general director Roman Andreikiv said about the end of the grain deal in July. Ukraine’s new corridor, protected by the military, has now allowed him to “free up warehouse space and increase activity.”Growing numbers of ships are streaming toward Ukraine’s Black Sea ports and heading out loaded with grain, metals and other cargo despite the threat...

Smoky and spicy, this Mexican pantry soup takes under 30 minutes

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:20:28 GMT

In the old-fashioned “fondas” scattered around Mexico, diners usually find only a handful of tables and simple, comforting dishes. A three-course lunch at many of these unpretentious mom-and-pop eateries can cost as little as a few dollars. One of those courses might well be sopa de fideos, a much-loved soup of thin noodles lightly browned in oil, then simmered in a puree of chicken broth with roasted tomato, onion, garlic and jalapeño. The result is a smoky, spicy vegetarian soup that can easily stand on its own as a full meal — and one that comes together with pantry ingredients in less than half an hour.Traditional recipes often call for roasting fresh tomatoes before adding them to the soup, but in this recipe from our book “Cook What You Have,” which draws on pantry staples to assemble easy, weeknight meals, we mimic those flavors with canned fire-roasted tomatoes. If you have only regular canned tomatoes (whole or diced) in the pantry, they’ll work fine but will lack the smoky s...

New home sales fell last month as mortgage rates hit 2023 high

Washington, DC (CNN) — New home sales in the United States fell in October as typical mortgage rates reached their highest levels this year.Sales of newly constructed homes fell 5.6% in October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 679,000, from a revised rate of 719,000 in September, according to a joint report from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Census Bureau. Sales were up 17.7% from a year ago. This was below analysts’ expectations of an annualized sales pace of 723,000.While sales of existing homes have been trending down since February and are on pace to be the worst in 30 years, new construction homes have been a welcome alternative for buyers. An ongoing inventory and affordability crunch has meant homeowners with ultra-low mortgage rates of 3% or 4% are reluctant to sell and buy another home at a much higher rate. Ireland: Israel is overreacting on Varadkar

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:20:28 GMT

Israel’s decision to summon the Irish ambassador over comments by Prime Minister Leo Varadkar is “an overreaction,” Ireland’s Education Minister Simon Harris said on Monday.Over the weekend, Varadkar triggered Israeli outrage when he quoted a verse from the Bible’s Parable of the Prodigal Son — “was dead, and is alive … was lost, and is found” — to commemorate the release of Emily Hand, an Irish-Israeli girl, aged 9, who had been kidnapped by Palestinian militant group Hamas. The post and the prime minister’s choice of words were criticized by Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, who accused Varadkar of trying to “legitimize and normalize terror,” remarks which were echoed by Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy.“This is how you describe a little girl who went missing during a stroll in a forest, then gets discovered by a friendly hiker. Not a girl brutally abducted by death squads that brutally massacred her neighbors. But this explains the extent of Ireland’s contribut...
