Miami Heat’s Oladipo tears patellar tendon, latest injury setback

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 10:04:50 GMT

MIAMI (AP) — The reactions from Victor Oladipo’s Miami Heat teammates told the story as he sat on the court, holding onto his left knee as fans watched in stunned silence. Kyle Lowry yelled a profanity. Max Strus covered his face with a towel. Jimmy Butler held his head in his hands, staring at the floor. They feared he was hurt badly. They were right. The Heat announced Sunday that Oladipo tore his left patellar tendon, a diagnosis that came after an MRI earlier in the day. The injury ends Oladipo’s season and calls his availability for the start of next season — and likely beyond — into serious doubt. He will need a third major surgery in just over four years, the previous two coming after a quadriceps injury over his right knee.No timetable will likely be known until after the surgery.“Yes, there are injuries. That is a part of this game. We understand that,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Sunday before the team learned of the diagnosis. “But the human side of it, w...

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 10:04:50 GMT

It was back to double duty Sunday for Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, with it still unclear when All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will be able to return to duty for the Milwaukee Bucks in this best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.“We have to prepare for both teams again,” Spoelstra said ahead of Monday night’s Game 4 at Kaseya Center, in the series the Heat lead 2-1.As in a Giannis-centric approach should Antetokounmpo make it back from the lower-back contusion sustained in the Heat’s Game 1 victory in Milwaukee. Or whether the Bucks will be without Antetokounmpo for a third consecutive game, with the teams splitting the two games in his absence.Antetokounmpo worked on the main court at Kaseya Center with Bucks coaches Sunday prior to his team’s video session.“We’ll continue to monitor him,” coach Mike Budenholzer told media Sunday. “He did some individual work today on the court and we’ll see ...

Yankees’ offense goes cold as Blue Jays hand them first series loss of the season

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 10:04:50 GMT

Clarke Schmidt, in his best start of 2023, cruised against a tough Blue Jays lineup on Sunday. Until he didn’t.The 27-year-old righty was perfect through the early frames, but a fifth inning double from Matt Chapman put that to rest. Then came the sixth inning, when Anthony Volpe’s first career error preempted a two-run home run from Vladimir Guerrero Jr., his second of the series. Daulton Varsho immediately followed that with a solo shot in what became a 5-1, series-winning victory for Toronto.Schmidt’s day ended there on an especially sour note, though his fifth start of the season was also his longest and most efficient. The right-hander, one of three replacement starters in the Yankees’ rotation due to injuries, threw 76 pitches over 5.2 innings while striking out eight Jays for a new career high. Schmidt also allowed a season-low three hits and dropped his ERA to 6.30, but the two longballs proved costly.Toronto added another run in the seventh when Dann...

Torchlight march marks mass deaths of Armenians

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 10:04:50 GMT

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — About 10,000 people bearing torches on Sunday night marched through Armenia’s capital to commemorate the estimated 1.5 million Armenians killed in Ottoman Turkey more than a century ago.The march from a central square to a sprawling memorial complex began with activists burning the flags of Turkey and Azerbaijan. Tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have spiraled in recent months since the blockage of the road leading to the ethnic Aremenian region of Nagorno-Karabakh within Azerbaijan.Historians estimate that, in the last days of the Ottoman Empire, up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks in what is widely regarded as the first genocide of the 20th century.Armenians have long pushed for the deaths to be recognized as genocide. While Turkey concedes that many died in that era, the country has rejected the term genocide, saying the death toll is inflated and the deaths resulted from civil unrest during the Ottoman Empire’s collapse.Armenia o...

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Spectators at Disneyland’s popular “Fantasmic!” show got a shock this weekend when the feature’s fire-breathing animatronic dragon suddenly burst into flames. No injuries were reported following the blaze Saturday night at the Southern California theme park, the Anaheim Fire Department said. Ryan Laux, a frequent Disneyland visitor, said fire has always been a part of the “Fantasmic!” presentation. But he said he knew something was awry when when flames didn’t come from where they usually do. “The head started going on fire instead of the fire projecting out,” said Laux, who lives in Los Angeles and captured the blaze on video. The show was stopped almost immediately “and then right after that, the dragon started catching fire and the whole body was up in flames,” he told The Associated Press on Sunday. The show takes place twice nightly near the park’s famous Tom Sawyer Island. The climax features Mickey Mouse battling a giant dra...
