Indonesia president holds meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss trade JAKARTA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo where the two leaders discussed trade and their growing partnership. Trudeau was welcomed officially to the president’s palace where he was greeted by the Indonesian military’s marching band. Indonesia is hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as the 10-nation bloc prepares to make Ottawa its latest strategic partner. Widodo left an event at the summit on Tuesday to personally greet Trudeau in Jakarta. Before their bilateral meeting took place, Trudeau gifted Widodo with a Team Canada Basketball jersey with his nickname, Jokowi, on it, alongside the number seven, which signifies Widodo being the seventh president of Indonesia. Trade Minister Mary Ng and Canada’s Envoy to the Indo-Pacific region also joined Trudeau. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 5, 2023. The Canadian Press

Man dead, woman critical after being pulled from Lake Michigan CHICAGO — One person is dead and a second person is in critical condition after being pulled from Lake Michigan in two separate incidents.Around 10:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a person in the water after a witness observed multiple people jumping into the lake on the 5000 block of South Lake Shore Drive. A 27-year-old man did not resurface. The Chicago Police Department Marine Unit responded and recovered the man who was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. He was later prononced dead.Area One detectives are investigating. ‘It seemed to be the only choice’: Suspect allegedly leaves note inside victim’s car after violent attack Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said witnesses saw a woman walking with a man near Montrose Harbor and then heard cries for help a short time later.Rescue teams were able to pull her out of the water. Police describe her condition as very critical.No word yet on how exactly the woman ended up in the water.

4 shot on Chicago's West Side CHICAGO — Four people were shot following an argument on the city's West Side.The shooting happened around 1:36 a.m. Tuesday on the 4700 block of West Gladys. Police said a group of people were in a verbal altercation with another group when an unknown person fired shots in the direction of the group.A 19-year-old woman was shot in the right buttocks and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. A 20-year-old man was shot in the left arm and groin area, and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. Man dead, woman critical after being pulled from Lake Michigan An 18-year-old man was shot in the right shin and transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Another 18-year-old man sustained a graze wound to the left shoulder and refused medical attention.No one is in custody. Area Four Detectives are investigating.
