UT names beaver fossil after Buc-ee's

Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for March 27, 2023.AUSTIN (KXAN) -- In Texas, beavers are highly associated with Buc-ee's, the nation's second-favorite gas station chain and truly a marvel for visitors passing through the Lone Star State. Now, the chain can be credited for the name of a new species of ancient beaver that was rediscovered by researchers in The University of Texas Austin’s fossil collections, according to a press release from UT.The beaver was called Anchitheriomys buceei, or “A. buceei” for short.A partial skull fossil from the ancient beaver Anchitheriomys buceei (on right) alongside a skull reconstruction. All cats and ferrets must be in carriers, and dogs must be leashed. SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- On Monday, Malcolm Gadsden, 51, pled guilty to intentionally killing January Butcher on or around December 23, 2021. Police say the investigation began when Gadsden called 911 on Christmas Eve in 2021, claiming he had just killed his girlfriend, January Butcher. Law enforcement located Butcher deceased at the residence. Gadsden provided a full confession and admitted to stabbing and choking Butcher.Gadsden is scheduled for sentencing in Schenectady County Court on June 20. GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- On Friday, Jerry N. Rogers, 39, was arrested following a drug investigation. According to the Warren County Sheriff's Office, the Narcotics Enforcement Unit made controlled buys of cocaine from Rogers on multiple occasions. He is being held in the Warren County Correctional Facility pending arraignment. ST. LOUIS - The City of St. Louis filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against car manufacturers Kia America and Hyundai Motor America over a surge in car thefts involving those vehicles.Last August, the city counselor’s office sent letters to Kia and Hyundai, chastising the car manufacturers for failing to install an engine immobilizer in many of their vehicles. Mayor Tishaura Jones and then-Director of Public Safety Dan Isom signed off on the letter, saying the companies had contributed to a public nuisance in the city.The lawsuit seeks damages in excess of $75,000, as well as punitive damages and attorneys' fees.Earlier that summer, St. Louis police reported a shocking increase in thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars. Thefts of these brands has been a big issue in the St. Louis region and around the country. Investigators said that police were called to Larry Lane around 7:00 p.m. The caller shared that multiple juveniles were firing gunshots. An educator at a Denver school is on paid leave after being arrested for allegedly possessing a loaded handgun on campus — a weapon that was discovered after security staff searched for a student who had said he brought a gun to school.Dante Quint, 25, was arrested on suspicion of the felony charge on March 1 after school security allegedly found a gun in his backpack on Feb. 28 at Bruch Randolph School, court records show.Quint works as a paraprofessional at the school and is on paid leave while the investigation continues, Denver Public Schools spokesman Scott Pribble said in an email.The arrest came as Denver’s school district grapples with gun violence among its students. A female shooter wielding two “assault-style” rifles and a pistol killed three students and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville on Monday, authorities said.
