Texas could ban instruction on sexual orientation, gender identity at all grade levels AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas is another step closer to barring students at all grade levels from receiving any instruction that mentions sexual orientation and gender identity. If it ultimately becomes law, the legislation would expand upon similar proposals in other states where critics labeled those bills as "don't say gay."The Texas Senate passed its version Tuesday of House Bill 890, which now includes a provision that schools may not provide "instruction, guidance, activities, or programming regarding sexual orientation or gender identity to students enrolled in prekindergarten through 12th grade." The original legislation, introduced by Republican Rep. Keith Bell of Kaufman, dealt more narrowly with how school districts should outline the process to hear complaints. However, senators made significant changes to the language during their debate so that it now includes limiting instruction topics as well as creating what supporters call a "parental bill of rights." While Twins wait for injured players, rookies helping team stay above water Baseball fans get excited when a rookie comes up and produces at the plate, of course. But sometimes their play in the field is the best indicator of how ready they are for the big leagues. It’s the split-second-decision making that tells you they’re not bowed by pressure.Edouardo Julien and Matt Wallner did a little of both in the Twins’ 7-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday at Target Field.Julien started the game with an opposite-field home run off Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafini, and Wallner, an outfielder from Forest Lake with a big arm and bat, doubled in a run for a 2-1 lead in the second. But each also made important defensive plays in the second inning when the Giants were close to tying the score. In right field with one out, Wallner charged a shallow liner and threw a bullet home to keep Lamonte Wade Jr. from attempting to score the tying run with one out in the first inning. In the second inning, Julien, a second baseman with a potent bat, threw...

Is it ‘Dee-Santis’ or ‘Deh-Santis’ running for president?

Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 18:21:47 GMT

Is it ‘Dee-Santis’ or ‘Deh-Santis’ running for president? Americans are getting to know Gov. Ron DeSantis as he mounts a bid for the White House. Now, they’ll have to figure out how to pronounce his last name. He’s gone back and forth between Dee-Santis and Deh-Santis over the years. In his presidential campaign launch ad on Wednesday night, he introduced himself as Dee-Santis, but in a follow-up video just a little later he went by the other one.The DeSantis campaign did not immediately respond to an inquiry Thursday into the preferred pronunciation. But the Dee-Santis or Deh-Santis question — albeit a trivial one — has prompted puzzlement for several years in Florida politics. As of late, it’s captured the attention of DeSantis’ political rival former President Donald Trump, who shared a Twitter post and video of the 44-year-old governor pronouncing his name differently. Twitter user “johnny maga” asked in the post, “Who changes the pronunciation of their own last name in their 40’s? Is there anything genuine about this guy?”Storms bring h...
