CHICAGO (AP) — It was rainy and cold in Chicago. Not that it mattered all that much to Willson Contreras — even amid his bumpy transition to St. Louis. After all, he was back at his first big league home.“It’s been (an) emotional last few days for me, for sure,” Contreras said. “But I’m happy to be back here at Wrigley Field.”Contreras and the struggling Cardinals opened a three-game series against the Cubs on Monday night. It was his first game against Chicago since he left the team in free agency, signing an $87.5 million, five-year contract with St. Louis in December. The Cubs paid tribute to Contreras with a pregame highlight video, and the grinning catcher popped out of the dugout and waved his hat to acknowledge the cheers from the crowd. He was greeted with more applause when he batted for the first time in the second inning, including Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman clapping on the mound. After he singled up the middle, Contreras held his arms in the air and motioned fo...D-backs’ Cuban-born OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. now U.S. citizen

WELLESLEY — Little went as planned for the Notre Dame Academy of Hingham for much of Monday’s girls lacrosse game at Wellesley. The host Raiders were better on the draws and on the ground, and they forced NDA to play from a deficit for way longer than they’re used to.But even when faced with such adversity, the visiting Cougars found a way to overcome it, rallying in the second half, then prevailing with a 10-9 double-overtime victory. With the win, NDA improves to 14-0, while Wellesley falls to 9-4.In a tense extra session, it was Notre Dame’s Emma Connerty who scored the game-winner. It proved to be NDA’s only lead of the game.“I think we learned a lot about ourselves and coming together,” said Connerty, who scored two goals. “We haven’t really been in this position before. These are the types of games we want to be a part of, these competitive games.”That’s exactly what NDA got from Wellesley, which held a 5-4 lead at the ...Shane McClanahan, Rays shut down Orioles, 3-0, to open series between AL’s top teams

Coming off a series in which they held their own against the best team in the National League, the Orioles largely did the same in their opener with the American League’s top club. But they’ve found themselves as losers of three of those four games after falling to the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-0, to begin a three-game set between teams who entered with the best records in the AL.Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan, who was born in Baltimore, held his favorite boyhood team scoreless over six innings, and Tampa Bay’s dominant bullpen finished the shutout. The defeat marked the Orioles’ first in a series opener after they won their first 11.They pushed it to that mark with Friday’s first game against the NL-best Atlanta Braves, but since, Baltimore’s hitters have gone 2-for-29 with runners in scoring position as the Orioles have dropped three straight. Star catcher Adley Rutschman had Monday’s final opportunity in those situations with chants of “A...Federal judge throws out Boston’s redistricting map

A federal judge ruled that the City Council likely violated the Constitution when factoring race into the establishment of Boston’s new redistricting map, and issued a preliminary injunction to bar the map’s use in the November election.U.S. District Court Judge Patti Saris said in a Monday ruling that the council likely violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, which bars laws requiring segregation of the races, when compiling the redistricting map that was approved last fall, by a 9-4 council vote.“The court allows the motion for preliminary injunction,” Saris wrote. “Plaintiffs have demonstrated a likelihood of success in showing that race played a predominant role in the City Council’s redrawing of Districts 3 and 4 in the enacted map, and defendants have not demonstrated that the enacted redistricting map is narrowly tailored to achieve a compelling interest.”“The ball is back in the City Council’s court,” Saris continued, later adding, “In my view, the City C...Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch will be open longer this season
