BRUSSELS — Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella will be moved from jail to house arrest after being detained for over two months pending trial as part of a probe into an alleged cash-for-influence corruption scheme dubbed Qatargate.“We’ve just learned with relief of the imminent liberation of Marc Tarabella,” a member of the Socialist MEP’s close circle wrote to POLITICO. A spokesperson for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office also confirmed Tarabella’s forthcoming release from a jail in Wallonia. Tarabella’s lawyer Maxim Töller said the MEP will be kept under house arrest — wearing an electronic surveillance bracelet — and vowed to continue fighting to secure his client’s full release at a court hearing next month.The European Parliament had voted to lift Tarabella’s immunity earlier this year to allow Belgian authorities to investigate, and the Socialists and Democrats group also suspended him as a member. For the fourth time, Italian judges on Tuesday put off a decision on whether to extradite MEP Andrea Cozzolino to Belgium, his lawyers confirmed to POLITICO. Cozzolino is a key suspect in the European Parliament’s alleged corruption scandal, known as Qatargate.Once again, the court in Naples called on Belgian prosecutors to send evidence on the state of prisons and provide more details on the arrest warrant they issued in February. A man was arrested Tuesday in a connection with a robbery at Santander Bank on Providence Road in Northbridge Tuesday morning, according to police. Officers responded to a 911 call from a Santander Bank customer around 9 a.m. The caller told dispatch the bank had just been robbed and the masked suspect took off on foot. Police say the caller provided a detailed description of the suspect and their direction of travel. Within minutes, Chief Timothy Labrie located the suspect, later identified as Todd Mitchell, in front of Shaw’s Supermarket. Mitchell was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Northbridge Police Department. He is charged with unarmed robbery. Police found the clothing, gloves, and mask Mitchell allegedly used during the robbery in a nearby dumpster, the department said. The Environmental Protection Agency proposed Tuesday to limit the use of the chemical ethylene oxide after finding higher than expected cancer risk at facilities that use it to sterilize billions of medical devices each year.The EPA says its proposal will reduce ethylene oxide emissions from 86 medical sterilization facilities across the United States by roughly 80%.
