The spotlight is on Ukraine at UN leaders’ gathering, but is there room for other global priorities?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:38:20 GMT

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The war in Ukraine and its visiting president take center stage at the United Nations this week, but developing countries will be vying for the spotlight as well as they push for faster action on poverty and inequality at the first full-on meeting of world leaders since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted travel three years ago.The annual meeting at the U.N. General Assembly takes place at a polarizing and divisive juncture in history — the most fraught and dangerous since the Cold War, according to many analysts and diplomats. They point to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which upended already difficult relations among major powers as well as the ongoing impact of the pandemic, high food prices, the worsening climate emergency, escalating conflicts, and the world’s failure to tackle poverty, hunger and gender inequality. For developing countries, the top priority is the U.N.’s two-day summit starting Monday aimed at generating action by world leaders ...

Dr. Qureshi from Loyola Medicine answers questions on new COVID vaccine

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:38:20 GMT

Most Americans should get an updated COVID-19 vaccine, health officials said Tuesday.Advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorsed the new shots for everyone 6 months and older and the agency's director quickly signed off Tuesday on the panel's recommendation. That means doses should be available this week, some as early as Wednesday. The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has faded, but there are still thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths in the U.S. each week. Hospitalizations have been increasing since late summer, though the latest data indicate infections may be starting to level off, particularly in the South.Still, experts worry that immunity from previous vaccinations and infections is fading in many people, and a new shot would save many lives.According to a survey last month that CDC cited, about 42% said they would definitely or probably get the new vaccine. Yet only about 20% of adults got an updated booster when it was offered a ...

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Byron Murphy isn't ready to claim he has the best hands on the team after his touchdown grab against Wyoming, but he's been waiting to stand tall in the end zone for a while now.Murphy hauled in a 1-yard scoring pass from Quinn Ewers for Texas' first touchdown in the Longhorns' 31-10 win over Wyoming on Saturday, and the 6-foot-1, 310-pound defensive lineman lined up at fullback to make the play. Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:38:20 GMT

Sammy Walker got his first taste of the NHL last season and looked like it in the Wild’s prospects game Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks.Walker, who will join the rest of the team for training camp when it starts on Thursday, scored a hat trick and added an assist in a 7-4 victory in the second annual Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase at TRIA Rink.It probably should have been more. With just less than 2 minutes to play, Walker had an open shot at an empty net but sent a leading pass to teammate Rasmus Kumpulainen — and the puck floated untouched into the back boards.“Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking,” Walker said. “I thought he was going and was trying to be a nice guy, just laying it out, and it kind of went too far. I kinda messed that up.”Coach Brett McLean, who ran the prospects camp and will take the reins for the first time as the Wild’s AHL coach in Iowa this fall, said he’d rather Walker had tried to score there but that was hardly the takeaway from the weekend.Th...

If the first two quarters of Sunday’s game are a harbinger of things to come, the answer is a resounding yes. The Oklahoma product’s first (and only) two receptions Sunday went for 60 and 53 yards (the former for a touchdown), and his lone punt return went for 45. After Sean Payton’s offense was completely devoid of big plays in Week 1, suddenly there’s a ray of hope. Provided Payton actually uses him, of course.Eric Bieniemy: So, maybe the former CU Buffs star/coach knows what he’s doing after all? Dismissed as an Andy Reid understudy in Kansas City, Bieniemy is out to prove himself as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator and play-caller this season. On Sunday, he didn’t just match wits with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, he toyed with him, especially in the second half ...
