This winter's massive Sierra Nevada snowpack could lead to devastating floods, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley and Tulare Lake Basin, as spring and summer snowmelt volumes pick up speed with the arrival of warm weather and sunshine, according to state water prognosticators. In its April to July snowmelt forecast, the California Department of Water Resources is predicting river systems up and down the state will receive volumes of water well above average, sometimes dramatically so. ‘Death of Downtown’ study: San Francisco ranks last The large amount of water isn't unexpected given the incredibly wet winter conditions and dam operators, water system managers, flood control districts and emergency response officials are working to coordinate how much water to move through the state's storage and delivery systems at specific times to capture as much as possible for urban, agricultural and environmental uses while also trying to reduce flood risks. McLean frozen food brand 8 Myles Inc. is closing a $1.05 million seed round this week to expand its operations and hire its first-ever full time employee. Co-founded by Myles Powell in 2015, 8 Myles makes frozen homestyle macaroni and cheese dinners that use no preservatives or artificial ingredients. It was in the process of raising money for the seed round that Powell began to hone his pitch to investors, emphasizing an ingredient label in which “you can pronounce all the words.”“It’s not a science project, just real food,” said Powell, its CEO. “I think once that started to click, our strategy changed with fundraising and that’s what got the interest from investors.”Powell didn’t start out making mac and cheese. When he founded the company, he planned to produce and sell eight different barbecue sauces — hence the name 8 Myles — before realizing that mac and cheese was his true specialty.

MANCHESTER, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey wildfire tore through 3,800 acres in the state’s pine barrens, raining down embers and confronting firefighters with 200-foot high flames, but leaving no one injured and property intact, officials said Wednesday. The blaze in Manchester, near Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, forced the evacuation of dozens of homes late Tuesday, with police going door-to-door to ask people to go to a temporary shelter at a nearby high school. The fire started Tuesday afternoon amid gusty winds, warm temperatures, low humidity and dried-out fuel, according to Trevor Raynor, a warden with state’s forest fire service. It’s about 50% contained as of Wednesday morning, but officials said they didn’t expect its perimeter to grow further.“This fire exhibited extreme fire behavior,” said John Cecil, an assistant commissioner in the state’s Department of Environmental Protection. “I don’t mean to be dramatic, but this was a severe situation th...Colorado AG settles lawsuit against Juul, state to receive $31.7M

(CNN) — When President Joe Biden spoke here Wednesday to mark a quarter-century of the Good Friday Agreement, it wasn’t from the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly — currently suspended over a Brexit trade dispute — but from a new university campus downtown. The choice of venue for Biden’s sole public event in Belfast was a symbolic one. While decades of violence between Nationalists and Unionists has been mostly left to another era, the peace is fragile and the politics are broken — making Biden’s speech to students as much about the future of this region as its bloody past.Biden’s optimistic speech did not paper over tensions that persist 25 years after the Good Friday Agreement was signed. He made a direct call for the parties in Northern Ireland to return to the power-sharing government — between those who want to remain part of the United Kingdom and those who favor a united Ireland — that was a centra...Feds bust major catalytic converter theft operation

The House spending plan for next year is not terribly different from the one offered by the governor at the end of February, coming in about $160,000 higher and including plans to move the state’s lottery online and provide free school lunches permanently.“The $56 billion budget that will be released from the House Ways and Means Committee today and laid before the House later this month will allow the Commonwealth’s economy to grow and remain competitive,” House Ways and Means Chair Aaron Michlewitz said.Coming in at $56.2 billion, the House’s version of the budget will go before the lower chamber in the next couple of weeks before moving on to the Senate and eventually the governor. The bill includes provisions which would see every student in the state fed at school for free, provide unlimited free phone calls to state prisoners, and make lottery purchases available via mobile platforms.“In the world now, with mobile sports betting being so popular, we feel it’s time for our...Latest news
