Election-denying former Colorado clerk avoids jail GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — A former Colorado county clerk accused of illegally accessing her election system avoided jail time for a misdemeanor obstruction conviction in another case on Monday. County Judge Bruce Raaum sentenced Tina Peters to 120 hours of community service and four months of home detention with an ankle monitor for trying to prevent authorities from taking an iPad she allegedly used to video a court hearing. However, the sentence was immediately put on hold while Peters appeals it, The Daily Sentinel reported.Peters, who has become a prominent national figure in the election conspiracy movement, had faced up to six months in jail. Peters’ attorney, Harvey Steinberg, argued that she should not go to jail since it was her first conviction and because she was exercising her rights to question government.District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said Peters, as an elected official, should be held to a higher standard.Raaum agreed that a higher standard should apply to ...

Hendrick won’t appeal penalties to No. 24, No. 48 cars COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Hendrick Motorsports said Monday it won’t appeal the latest penalties handed down by NASCAR on the race teams of drivers Alex Bowman and William Byron last week.NASCAR took both the No. 48 and No. 24 cars to its R&D center following the race at Richmond and found illegal modifications in the greenhouse, or center, area of the car. NASCAR docked the team’s 60 points and five playoff points apiece last Thursday. Also, interim crew chiefs in Greg Ives for the No. 48 and Brian Campe for the No. 24 were fined $75,000 and suspended for two races.A statement released by Hendrick Motorsports said the organization will be best served using its time and resources on competing each weekend. “The area of the race cars NASCAR focused on is not related to our performance on the track,” the statement said. Hendrick Motorsports had a successful appeal of penalties it incurred following the Phoenix race last month when its four race teams were assessed penalties of 10...

Trump files long-shot appeal of judge’s order for Pence to testify in January 6 probe (CNN) — Former President Donald Trump has appealed a judge’s order that former Vice President Mike Pence must testify to a federal grand jury investigating the 2020 election aftermath but hasn’t gotten a court’s intervention to block Pence from testifying, according to a person familiar with the case.Trump’s attempt to claim executive privilege around their conversations is considered a long shot, given that the former president has lost several attempts in court to block other top officials from his administration from testifying.Pence has said he would not appeal the judge’s order from late March and would comply with his subpoena. He could be called before the grand jury as early as this week.Sealed filings in the DC Circuit Court of Appeals related to Trump’s appeal came in on Monday and do not indicate Trump is seeking any emergency intervention at this time, though one of his lawyers was spotted at the courthouse on...
